![]() While partially true, there are many ways to validate or verify ages and growth rates derived from fish hard parts. However, unlike trees, fish often deposit numerous growth rings every year on scales, and daily rings on otoliths (see Miniature ear bones).ĭetecting and interpreting these patterns can be challenging, leading to the common saying that ageing fish is often more of an art than a science. Much like the rings on a tree, fisheries researchers can use these patterns to estimate both the age and growth of a fish. Due to seasonal changes in temperature or food availability, major life history events are recorded as markings on their scales or bones. ![]() As fish grow, their hard parts (scales, bones, etc.) must grow accordingly. Scales have been used to age fishes since 1890, and this technique is still widely used in the fisheries field today. One common technique to estimate the age and growth of fish is to interpret patterns that developed on their calcified structures, such as scales, bones, spines, fin rays, or inner ear bones called otoliths (see Rings in their ears). Fish Bio Article: Written In The ScalesĮffectively managing fish populations requires knowing how quickly individual fish grow, and how old fish are at key stages of their life cycle. The amount of food a natural fish can get or eats in winter can influence the thickness and observability of the winter checks. Hatchery smolts are released as one year old smolts and will have one winter check. Natural fish can smolt at two years old and can have what the CDFW calls winter checks, where circuli bunch together. Hatchery juveniles have a more regular spacing pattern due to being fed every day and usually have more circuli. Each growth ring is called a circulus (plural: circuli). As the fish grows, the scales develop circular growth rings around the focus. Natural fish have irregular spacing between circuli (rings like a Redwood tree) due to variable growth.Ĭirculi Definition: When a fish is hatched, it is covered with tiny scales. ![]() The CDFW looks at the juvenile growth period which starts at the center or near center. The scales will be put between two glass slides and viewed using micro imaging or a micro-image/microfiche capture machine. Then CDFW will take scale samples - three to ten of them. Should be the size of your thumb and circular.

I do not know if this a retro touch, but I really like it combined with the longer than average hour and minute hands. This is the first watch in my experience to have the second hand actually extending out to the outer edge of the second markers. The ⅕ of a second markers have 5 second numerals on the outer edge of the dial, behind each lumed index, which looks great to me. Only the brand logo and name are printed on the upper half of the dial and the model name, “Retrospect”, is on the lower half, all in the right size and fonts for this watch. In addition, the white on brown 6 o’clock date window gives the face perfect symmetry. The polished and filled hour, minute blade hands and the arrow head and fan tailed second hand and the indices use superluminova C3 green for excellent night time visibility. The sandwich dial face uses 11 arrow shaped indices and one four sided index at 6 o’clock. There is no detail on this watch that has been overlooked, in my opinion. The screw down case back is brushed with etched watch information encircling it’s outer edge. The brushed, inward sloping, stainless steel bezel insert is PVD engraved to be very durable and attractive at the same time. The polished, stainless coarse coin edged, 120 click, unidirectional bezel is extremely solid with no black play at all, something I rarely find. The 200 meter/660 ft W/R rated watch is made of 316L steel and the case is completely polished except for the brushed finish on the top of the lugs. ![]() The watch itself is an extremely wearable size of 40.5 mm in diameter, 12.5 mm thick (15 mm with the double domed sapphire crystal), 49 mm lug to lug width (with drilled lugs), 22 mm lug width and has a 7 mm coarse, gear edged polished and signed crown at 3 o’clock. My example does not vary by more than a second a day, and if it is worn daily it is the most accurate automatic movement I have seen to date. The movements are calibrated and stress tested in 4 positions by Nodus in Los Angeles, giving the watch superb accuracy. The only pre-assembled part of the watch they receive is the movement, which in this watch is the extremely popular Time Module NH35a from Seiko. In addition, all NODUS watches are designed, assembled, inspected and tested in Los Angeles. The Retrospect is based on 1960’s watches from Breitling, Rado and Gruen but with performance, quality and value not available until now. The watch is also available in Slate Gray and Frost White. For this review I have a Retrospect in Industrial Brown. The company has developed two exquisite lines of watches at this time, the Contrail and the Retrospect. However it would be good to know where these errors are coming from. It seems like as long as error rates are less than 1% them nobody seems to bother reducing them further, I don't think I would bother either. I haven't dealt much with the software side of things when it comes to bitcoin mining. Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't usb communication send parity check bits along with the data? It would seem that the silabs chip would handle some error checking on the usb layer but I may be wrong. When there are multiple asics communicating in a chain to a single micro if multiple nonces are generated at the same time they merge on the communication line and are lost. None of the Asics on the market store the nonce for any amount of time as soon as it is generated it is passed along, if something happens in the process it is lost. ![]() I would expect it might at least ask for the nonce again in case of transmission error.Īs far as I know all the current mining hardware just passes along the nonce and then it is checked against sha256. ![]() But all bfgminer does, in this case, is flag HW error and close/reopen the usb port. Ok maybe "the nonce *is* the checksum" since it will be checked by the host standard c sha256 routines. The protocol just sends 4 bytes of nonce data. I can't see any evidence of error detection or correction on the protocol, no parity, no checksums, no resend. So I am looking through the bfgminer driver: If you’ve ever thought of visiting Cuba there are many Cuban movies and documentaries to help you to research your trip, but none are as epic as this one.
